Are you one someone who has recently taken up running, or perhaps rediscovered your passion for it after a hiatus ⏳
Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a newcomer to the sport, the goal to gradually extend time spent on the pavement is a common goal.
I’ve had my fair share of running experiences over the years, although these days, it looks a tad different; instead of completing gruelling Ironman races, I find myself chasing after a tireless toddler!
I’m going to run you through my personal strategies for increasing the duration of my runs and share valuable advice that I often pass on to my running clients.
So, why is it so crucial to boost your time on your feet?
Let’s dive into the details.
The Significance of extending Your running Time
First and foremost, it’s important to understand why increasing your time on your feet matters. While most runners may initially fixate on covering longer distances, the truth is that a 5km run can vary dramatically depending on the terrain.
A leisurely jog along a flat, paved path is an entirely different beast compared to a challenging uphill climb, even if the distance remains constant.
Therefore, the key is to shift your focus from merely increasing your mileage to progressively extending the time you spend running.
Focus on time, Not distance
To achieve this goal effectively, it’s essential to concentrate on time rather than distance. Begin by dedicating a specific duration to your runs, such as 5 minutes, and gradually work your way up to 10 minutes, then 15, 20, and so forth. This approach allows you to build endurance and adapt to varying terrains and conditions, ensuring a well-rounded running experience.
Embrace the joy of running
Above all else, remember that running should be a joyful and liberating activity. It serves as a means of stress relief and tension release for many individuals. So, enjoy your runs – relish the feeling of your feet hitting the ground, immerse yourself in the beauty of your surroundings, and breathe deeply!
