Surgery as the last resort for arthritis

I was just enjoying a cup of coffee and was thinking about knee and hip arthritis. It got me thinking, what are the best strategies to get results in rehabilitation?

I was inspired to share this with you. I hope it’s valuable.

So…

This is important because unfortunately surgery is still considered the norm for knee and hip arthritis.

The problem with rushing into surgery is that you can commonly avoid this with the right advice. Surgery to the knee and hip is a major procedure and should always be a last resort with arthritis in your knee and hip. Rushing into surgery without considering Physio is not the best practice in 2023. Having surgery too soon on your knee/hip can leave you with a big hill to climb after the operation. You can have reduced movement in the joint and frustration in how long it has takes to recover from the surgery.

I don’t want that for you.

I want you to feel empowered and strong in your body. To have confidence in your knee and hips to tackle the goals you want to achieve in 2024.

Your knee and hip pain can come under control with the right plan and strategy to build the support around the joint. This is possible with a thorough assessment and a structured plan to help you gain control of the pain in your knee/hip.

This plan builds the support around the joint leading to you gaining control of how your body moves. Your pain is under control, and you can live your life at the intensity you want.

How does that sound?

So here is what I wanted to share with you today:

  1. Commonly pain into your knee and hip is happening to you due to reduced support around your joint.

That is, over time you have lost muscle strength around your knee and hip. Typically, this is from reduced activity, modified activity, or other priorities in your life. The fact that your knee and hip is painful right now is an accumulation of the choices in your life over many years/decades. The good news is, you can change the trajectory from here. This is under your control, and you can change the pain you are feeling in your knee/hip.

     2. The best approach to changing the pain in your knee/hip is to get clear on pain relieving exercises and strategies early in the first 3-4 weeks.

This will build your confidence in your knee/hip, improve your mood and get some early wins for you. Now that your pain has eased we then need to get clear on a strategy to build the support around your knee/hip.

Through a plan that does this step by step, your joint gets the “goldilocks” level of progression that is just right. If the exercises are too easy, progress will not happen, if they are too hard, then the joint will flare up. This can reduce your confidence and you will plateau or even worse give up. If you hit the goldilocks zone for a 3–4-month period then results happen where your pain is down. Your independence is up, your mood is lifted, and you have your knee/hip supported to get on with your life.

Listen, I hope this was helpful.
