Neck pain is one of the most common symptoms people present with when they come into the clinic!
It’s extremely common, that doesn’t mean it should be normalised…
Neck pain can be really debilitating and may bring about acute symptoms that will really affect your ability to get out and enjoy your life!
The three biggest mistakes I find people make with their neck pain are:
Not knowing the effects of posture on the Thoracic spine (mid back).
Not focusing on strengthening their shoulders and back.
Relying on hands on, treating the symptoms and not rectifying the true cause.
1. Effects of posture on the Thoracic spine (mid back)
There is little to no awareness or attention given to improving the movement of the Mid back. The Mid back refers to the area from the bottom of the neck to the bottom of the rib cage. If the Mid back is slightly rounded or if your shoulders are forward, then it is likely caused by postural habits that most of us have adopted by 2023.
What are common causations here is posture during desk work, studying, slouching when using our phones, which are activities most of us tend to do everyday.
2. Not focusing on shoulder and mid back strength
Another common mistake is not putting enough importance on the strength in our shoulders and muscles around the Mid back. If the Neck’s foundations are strong and stable, it builds a solid foundation for support.
This works in the opposite way too, If this foundation is weak then it brings about common aches and pains in the neck as it’s not supported by the core of the body.
Working on these strength areas is commonly overlooked, but with a shift of focus it can be rectified in time.
3. Relying on hands on, treating the symptoms and not rectifying the true cause
The third common mistake I see is complete reliance on hands on neck treatment. Massage feels great and certainly delivers on getting temporary relief, but symptoms return a few weeks down the track and the vicious cycle continues.
The goal we are looking for is a balance of temporary relief and empowering you to learn the exercises that will fix point 1 and point 2 above!
