I was with a client earlier this week and they asked me: “Why does my lower back problem keep coming back? It’s impacting my confidence and even my mental health. Can you help?”
This is an important topic to discuss as pesky back pain tends to keep coming back at random times.
This can impact you when you are playing with your kids, picking something up from the floor, or even putting on your shoes on in the morning.
This will leave you frustrated and if it happens frequently enough, it will impact your ability to trust your body.
Eventually, this can flow on to impact your confidence and trust in yourself.
Reoccurring lower back pain has a significant impact on your quality of life. This typically extends beyond the physical.
Commonly, clients with lower back pain have reduced activity, lower confidence and even weight gain. Back pain influences your mood, your relationships, your job, your social life and even the connection time with your kids.
You become frustrated, in pain, short of temper, and take it out on the people you love the most.
I do not want this for you.
I want you to put your doubts and fears behind you. It is time to turn a negative cycle into a positive one. I want you to feel strong, have confidence in your body and have an improved mood. This will have a flow on effect to improved relationships with your friends and family.
So this is what I wanted to share with you today:
- The major fault with many reoccurring lower back issues is that the true causes behind your problem are never addressed. Commonly this is not your fault. That is, to resolve your lower back problem, a step-by-step plan that focused on addressing your pain for the first 3-4 weeks is vital. This must include basic movement exercises to improve how your lower back, hips, and mid back (thoracic) moves. Once your pain settles, you feel less frustrated and more at peace with the world. This is now where the real work begins to fix your lower back. That’s right, pain relief is simply the first step.
- The second step is to fix the foundations. Once your pain has settled moderate level strengthening exercises to fix the foundations must occur. The 3 key pillars to focus on to fix your lower back is your leg strength, hip strength, and your core strength. These are extremely specific and targeted exercises that need to be done in the right order. Otherwise the exercises can backfire on you very quickly. It is common at this point for flare ups to happen, but with the right plan, advice and education, you will succeed.
- The final step is to future proof your lower back, by progressing your strength in your 3 key pillars to a higher level. This will ensure that your lower back has the support it needs. By building strength to a higher level your issues don’t come back. You have full trust and confidence in your body to achieve your goals. This leads to improvements in your mental health, your relationships, your family time and even your career.
Listen, I hope this was helpful.
