WHY you could be suffering outer hip pain!

Let’s talk about WHY you could be suffering from outer hip pain!

You have spent so much time taking care of everyone else now you’re suddenly in your late 30’s/ 40’s and SO sore in your HIP joint.

Here is the thing..

Outer hip pain can be a distressing and frustrating.. especially when it interferes with day to day life.

If you find yourself suffering from hip pain as you get older, there could be several reasons contributing to this discomfort.

1. Age-related changes: As we age, our bodies undergo natural wear and tear including the hip! Over time, tendons and muscles supporting the hip joint may weaken, increasing vulnerability.

2. Gender predisposition: In my 20 years of clinical experience, women tend to be more predisposed to outer hip pain compared to men. This gender difference could be attributed to anatomical, hormonal, and lifestyle factors.
3.Tendon issues: The tendon on the side of the hip, known as the iliotibial (IT) band, can be particularly prone to problems. With repetitive movements and stress, micro tears may occur in the IT band. These small tears can lead to inflammation and pain.

4.Bursitis: Bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that act as cushions between bones and tendons: Reducing friction and allowing smooth movement. Doing repetitive activities or movements can cause inflammation in the bursae around the outer hip leading to bursitis and pain.
5. Tendinopathy: Condition where a tendon becomes overloaded and strained, usually due to repetitive movements or overuse. Your outer hip may be experiencing this causing pain.

To address outer hip pain effectively, it’s crucial to prioritise self-care and take steps to improve your hip health. Here are some strategies to consider:

1. Strengthening exercises: Targeted exercises to strengthen the muscles around the hip. Focus on exercises that target the glutes, hip abductors, and core muscles.

2. Stretching routine: Regular stretching can help improve flexibility and reduce tension in the hip area.

3. Rest and recovery: Rest and recovery time to allow healing is imperative for any joint.

4. Change activities: Consider modifying or avoiding activities that flare up hip pain.. EG: high-impact or strenuous exercises.

5. Seek professional help: Consult with a healthcare professional such as a sports physio who specialises in how the body moves. They can provide a proper diagnosis and design a personalised treatment plan.

Remember, taking care of yourself is essential, and investing in your hip health will lead to improved well-being.
